Measurement guide

For the best fit, take your measurements while wearing a leotard or tight-fitting clothing. Use a soft measuring tape and keep it snug but not too tight. Always measure in a straight line and parallel to the floor where necessary.

Please download the Measurement Form to fill in your details. This form includes the list of measurements needed for your custom leotard. Once completed, send it back to us so we can get started on your order.

Step 1: Preparing for Measurements

For accurate results, the gymnast should be wearing underwear or tight-fitting training clothes. Ideally, this would be a bodysuit, which the gymnast can wear under their competition leotard.

Measurements should be taken close to the body, ensuring they are neither too tight nor too loose.”

Step 2: Ensuring Proper Positioning for Accurate Measurements

To ensure accurate positioning for several key measurements, it is essential to tie an elastic rope around the gymnast’s waist. Without the rope, it will be impossible to take precise measurements for the “Back” and “Rise (crotch depth).” Please be careful and don’t overlook this step!

Step 3: Gymnast’s Height

In the creation of a leotard pattern for rhythmic gymnastics, the “Height” measurement is not used. It is needed only for informational purposes.

Step 4: Girth Measurement

The girth measurement is taken around the body to determine the overall circumference. It is essential for ensuring the leotard fits snugly and comfortably. The measurement should be taken from the shoulder, down the front, around the waist, and then up the back to the starting point. This step is crucial for creating a properly fitted pattern that accommodates the gymnast’s body shape.

Step 5: Chest Size (Above the Chest)

To measure chest size, place the tape measure under the armpits and horizontally across the chest. For adult gymnasts with formed breasts, don’t measure on the breasts. It is recommended that the gymnast wear a bodysuit, the same one they wear under their competition leotard, for the most accurate measurement.

Step 6: Waist Size

Measure around the natural waistline, where the elastic rope is tied. This measurement is crucial for ensuring a snug fit around the waist of the leotard.

Step 7: Hips Size

Measure horizontally across the most protruding points of the buttocks. This ensures that the leotard fits comfortably and accurately around the hips.

Step 8: Back to Waist Length

This is a crucial measurement for creating the pattern. It is mandatory to take this measurement with the elastic rope tied at the waist. Measure along the spine, starting from the seventh cervical vertebra and extending down to where the elastic rope crosses the waist.

Step 9: Crotch Length

Measure along the central line, starting from where the elastic rope crosses in front, and extending to where it crosses behind. Pass the measuring tape between the gymnast’s legs to ensure an accurate crotch length measurement.

Step 10: Neck Size

Measure around the narrowest point of the neck. This measurement is essential for designing the high collar of the leotard. If the measurement is taken at a point other than the narrowest part of the neck, the high collar may not fit correctly and may not hug the neck as intended.

Step 11: Shoulder Top Measurement

Measure from the base of the neck to the point where the shoulder meets the start of the arm. This measurement is important for ensuring the proper fit and alignment of the leotard’s shoulder area.

Step 12: Sleeve Length

Measure from the highest point of the shoulder bone (the outermost point of the “Shoulder Width” measurement), through the elbow, and down to the wrist as the first measurement. For the second measurement, extend the tape to the visually harmonious end of the sleeve, which is typically 3-4 centimeters below the wrist. This ensures the sleeve has a balanced and comfortable fit.

Step 13: Under Arm Width

Measure around the bicep on a straight arm. This measurement ensures that the leotard fits comfortably under the arms without being too tight or restrictive.

Step 14: Wrist Size

Measure around the base of the wrist. This measurement ensures that the sleeve fits properly around the wrist without being too tight or loose.

Step 15: Leg Opening Measurement

Measure from the elastic band at the waist to the point where the leg opening starts. If the gymnast prefers longer legs, the measurement should be taken slightly shorter. Be careful not to expose the hip bone, as it should never be visible. This ensures a comfortable fit and proper coverage.

Step 16: Skirt Front Length

Measure along the central line in front, from the elastic rope at the waist to the desired bottom edge of the skirt. This measurement ensures that the skirt length is accurate and meets the gymnast’s preferences.

Step 17: Skirt Back Length

Measure along the central line at the back, from the elastic rope at the waist to the desired bottom edge of the skirt. If the gymnast has a fuller figure, especially around the hips, it’s important to measure along the dot line, which is marked in the provided picture, to ensure the buttocks are fully covered for a comfortable and flattering fit. This ensures the skirt fits properly and hangs evenly at the back.

Step 18: Waist to Floor Length

Measure from the elastic rope at the waist to the floor. It’s best if the gymnast stands with their feet flat on the ground. To avoid any inaccuracies, you can have the gymnast stand against a wall. Find the starting point from the elastic band at the waist and then measure straight down along the wall. This ensures the measurement is not larger than it should be and gives a precise length for the leotard or skirt.

Step 19: Thigh Measurement

Measure around the fullest part of the thigh, ensuring the tape is snug but not tight. This measurement helps to ensure a comfortable fit around the thigh area, especially for leotards with tight or fitted legs.

Step 20: Knee Measurement

Measure just above the knee at its widest point. This ensures a comfortable fit around the knee area, especially if the leotard or skirt has any fitted or tapered sections. Be sure the gymnast is standing straight, and the tape measure is snug but not tight.

Step 21: Ankle Size

Measure around the narrowest point of the ankle, where it is the most constricted. This ensures the leotard or skirt fits properly around the ankle without being too tight or loose.

Step 22: Crotch Depth

For this measurement, the gymnast should sit on a chair. Measure along the sideline from the elastic rope at the waist to the surface of the chair. This measurement ensures that the leotard fits comfortably in the crotch area when seated.
